B.A. (Hons) in Legal Studies: What is It?
Three-year B.A. The (Hons.) Legal Studies program aims to foster young students' legal imagination and lay a solid foundation for them to later study law and social sciences or enter the legal and related fields.
B.A. The JGLS (Hons.) Legal Studies program, which debuted in the 2020–21 academic year, is the nation's first multidisciplinary undergraduate degree in legal studies.
It enables a high school student to learn the law in a three-year program while still having the choice to transfer to various post-graduate programs.
In the past ten years, it has developed top-notch, five-year law programs that have seen tremendous growth in popularity. This resulted from a series of initiatives designed to elevate academic standards and related initiatives at the law school.
This three-year program aims to alter the way prospective law students view the field. Due to this course's enormous success in the United States and the United Kingdom, JGU made the decision to introduce it to our nation so that our kids would have the opportunity to learn about law without committing to a five-year program.
What are the benefits of pursuing a B.A. in Legal Studies with Honors?
Law, politics, economics, and other topics are available in the six semesters of the Legal Studies program. The curriculum establishes connections between various legal-related verticals.
Here are some benefits of taking this course
Before the introduction of this course, students who wanted to pursue legal studies after passing their 12th grade exams by joining a good Clat Coaching and had to enroll in a 5-year program. For a student who is unsure whether she/he wants to pursue law as a career, a five-year commitment is not ideal, so they can gain from this course.
The three-year LLB program is still an option for students who wish to pursue law as a career and who wish to take this course, which offers a thorough and in-depth study of the law and other disciplines.
In addition, they have the option to change their post-graduate program's discipline and pursue a different line of work thanks to this program.
Understanding the larger context of law, the ways in which law is used as a social engineering tool, protecting the rule of law, promoting access to justice, and introducing the legal framework to support business, trade, and investment are all possible through undergraduate legal studies.
An analytical mind that can aid in the creation of a lawyer's toolkit can be developed by a student who is enrolled in an undergraduate law programme.
Who should take this course?
A variety of candidates' needs were taken into consideration when creating this course. This bachelor's in arts program provides candidates with the knowledge and opportunity to either continue their legal studies or pursue other career goals. Subjects covered include law, economics, political science, history, and others.
High school students who aren't sure whether to go into law
Making significant decisions is difficult, especially when you are under the age of 18. For many high school students, the thought of entering a profession without even knowing the nuances of practice is terrifying.
Sadly, this is the situation for many courses. A student in his 12th grade must dedicate four years to pursuing a technical degree in engineering before he can experience the field firsthand. The compatibility with the job is not tested until after graduation, and if it fails the litmus test, working in that field gets harder every day.
Similar to this, if a student decides to pursue law as a career right out of college, they risk losing 5 years. The majority of the time, they adjust to life as a law student and then as an attorney, but there are times when it becomes challenging to stay in the field.
They might not be aware of the difficulties or rewards associated with a lawyer's daily life.
This course gives the student that freedom; they can select this three-year undergraduate course and acquire in-depth knowledge and understanding of the law and our nation's legal system. They are given the opportunity to learn about international trade laws and the development of justice delivery systems. Internships allow them to learn in-depth practical knowledge about the realities of the field, which complements this.
They have a choice at the end of the course as to whether they want to pursue a career in law or pursue something else.
2. Students who want to pursue a career in law but do not intend to practice law
Generally speaking, there are two types of students: those who are interested in studying law or becoming a lawyer and those who are not.
The third type of student is one who wants to study law but isn't interested in becoming a lawyer. Their objectives can be varied because there are many options available besides becoming a lawyer, which requires studying the law.
Competitive exams like the UPSC are an example that is frequently used. This test requires thorough preparation in a wide range of subjects. A significant portion of the curriculum includes various legal topics, including Criminal procedure, penal code provisions, and constitutional law.
They enquire about topics like political science, history, economics, and other subjects covered in this B.A. (Hons) in Legal Studies program.
3. Students who want to launch their own business
India's business landscape has entered a new era, and it's here to stay.
Our youth are now participating in a global revolution that is producing world-class entrepreneurs, moving them beyond the typical 9 to 5 jobs and family businesses.
One of the most recent instances is the program Shark Tank, which recently debuted in India after enjoying tremendous success in almost 40 other nations. The majority of contestants are young, and the Indian government is betting on their future with initiatives like Startup India and Mudra Loans.
When starting your own business, understanding the law is helpful, particularly understanding corporate and trade laws. There are two common approaches: either you pay someone to handle all the compliance when your bootstrapped venture's cost-to-work ratio might not allow it, or you oversee every aspect of compliance and take the lead whenever there is a legal obstacle or challenge.
Several corporate laws, including contract law, company law, international trade law, and others are covered in this course. A very useful graduation if you intend to take on the role of a business leader.
4. Any other student who chooses to pursue a career in law
The five-year course is currently the most popular way to study law in India, but the 3+3 gateway is still a viable option.
Let's examine three situations in terms of simple numbers.
Scenario 1: After completing a degree like a BBA or B. Com, you pursue an LLB and spend three years in law school learning about the law.
Scenario 2: You enroll in a five-year program; while you spend nearly five years learning about law, you also study literature, management, and other subjects that will not be useful to you as a lawyer.
Scenario 3: You enroll in a three-year B.A. (Hons.) in Legal Studies program before enrolling in a three-year LLB program. The maximum period of exposure to the law in this case—and in all three scenarios—is six years.
Even the subjects you study in the three years leading up to graduation that are not related to law are organized in a way that supports your legal study.
